Gift Guide for Kids: Non-Tech Toys

Given the numerous options today and the abundance of technology, it is always hard to choose toys to give as gifts for kids.

If you are buying for your own kids, you know what they already have.

However, if you are buying for other kids in your life, you don’t necessarily know what they already have or how the parents feel about technology and its role in their kids’ toys.

Here are some great non-tech toys for kids of a variety of ages if you would like to get that something more educational, crafty, or imaginative.

Non-Tech Toys for 2-4 Year Olds

Playskool Busy Poppin’ Pals – I just bought this for my second daughter.  When I first saw this at someone else’s house I thought for sure it would become boring after a few play sessions.  However, my oldest daughter is 2.5 and absolutely loves it.  It was entertaining to her as a baby, but even more so now that she can work it herself.

Mega Bloks – These bloks are perfect for little hands that need help fine tuning their fine motor skills.  While they are large enough for little kids to safely play with, they are also fun for older kids as well as they learn how to stack and build towers and other structures.

Paper Bag Puppets – Arts and crafts are always a great idea as a non-tech toy.  These DIY puppets are perfect in that you can allow your child to be creative in using paper, glue, and colors, but then they also get to imagine and play with the puppets after they are done making them.

Rocket Adventure Cape Costume Kit – Capes and dress up costumes are always a hit with the pre-school aged crowd.  If you have a child in your life that loves space or exploring, this would be the perfect option for them.

Non-Tech Toys for 5-7 Year Olds

Melissa and Doug Ice Cream Counter – Non-tech toys are perfect for encouraging pretend play and imagination.  If you have an ice cream lover or a child that loves their play kitchen, this could be a great addition to their toys.

Kid K-nex – Kids that love to create and build will love a K-nex set.  The best part is that they can use the gift over and over to make endless creations.

Melissa and Doug Wooden Stamp Set – Stamps are something that are usually given out as rewards or prizes in school, during an extra-curricular activity, or at the library.  Most kids LOVE getting stamps.  This would be a great set for them to bring the fun home.

Connect4– Board games are a perfect way to get the TV and video games turned off and create family bonding.  If the child in your life is new to board games, Connect4 might be a great one to start introducing the concept and to teach the concept of strategy.

Non-Tech Toys for 9-13 Year Olds

Grow n’ Glow Terrarium – If the child you are buying for loves bugs and the outdoors, this might be the perfect kit to allow them to learn and have fun creating their own terrarium.

Crayola Fashion Superstar – As kids get a little older, they don’t always find as much joy in coloring.  This one might technically break the rules of non-tech toys, but it still allows kids to be creative as well as use a little technology if they want to.

Snap Circuits Jr. – Budding scientists will love this one.  I used to babysit for a family who’s son had one of these sets and he absolutely loved it.  It teaches you about circuits and lets you learn and create through trial and error.

Spirograph – I had one of these sets as a kid and it kept my sister and I busy for hours.  There are so many cool designs to make and the process of creating the designs is almost relaxing.  This is a timeless gift that kids are sure to love!

Buying gifts for kids can be daunting in a world of technology, but there are so many non-tech toys out there that are still fun and engaging.
